The Google Business Profile Setting That Hides You

There's one setting on your Google Business Profile that decides which searches you show up for. Get it wrong and you're invisible to the customers you want. It takes two minutes to check.

Your primary category is everything

Google uses your Business Profile's primary category to decide what you are — and therefore which searches to show you in. Choose 'Establishment' or something vague and Google has no idea when to surface you. Choose the exact, specific category and you appear for the searches that matter.

The common mistakes

  • Too broad — 'Contractor' instead of 'Bathroom remodeler'.
  • Wrong category left from setup you never revisited.
  • Missing secondary categories for your other services.
  • Copying a competitor's category that doesn't match what you do.

Any of these quietly caps how often you appear — no error message, just fewer customers.

The two-minute fix

Open your Google Business Profile, go to Edit, and check the primary category is the most specific accurate description of your main service. Add secondary categories for your other services. Save. That single change can widen — or correct — every local search you appear in.

Frequently asked questions

How important is the Google Business Profile category?

Very. Your primary category is one of the strongest signals for which local searches you appear in. The wrong one can make you effectively invisible for your best terms.

Can I have more than one category?

Yes — one primary plus several secondary categories. Use the primary for your main service and secondaries for the others you offer.

How do I change my category?

In your Google Business Profile, choose Edit, find Category, and set the most specific accurate primary category plus relevant secondaries, then save.
